Joe Kempf was born in West Bend, Wisconsin in 1963 (The same day astronauts landed on the moon). He began recognizable figure drawing at age four and hasn't hardly stopped drawing for more than twelve hours at a time since then. His formal art education began when he minored in a degree in drawing from The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) earned in 1987. Life since then has been all about work, moving to Oregon and moving "back home", raising a family, and making art. He spends most summer weekends at fairs and craft shows in Wisconsin drawing caricatures as well as cars, dogs, wedding couples, and whatever else people want. He notes he can print acrylic and watercolor. He can draw with markers, colored pencils, pastels, ink, and charcoal (even designs business cards, signs, and greeting cards.
